Being animal lovers is usually something that runs through your veins. Surrounded by unconditional love and affection is just a peaceful place to be. Sometimes they need our help more than we know. That is what happened one day when I arrived at a local farm. There was this sweet beautiful mare named Sam. She was a cribber and had fallen through the cracks with no one noticing how bad she was malnourished. Well she got my attention that day for sure. It was the beginning of April 2017. The vet arrived and his advice was grim. He said “put her down”. I have worked in Equine Nutrition since 2009. I had a good feeling I could save her.
In the next few days we put her in a new stall where she could recover and began giving her increased nutrition each day. After a week she lost all the hair on her legs and in patches all over her body. Did I mention it was 90 degrees where we live in April. We used legs socks and ointments to help her heal. We started her on a heavy dose of Camelina oil daily. She was improving but we noticed she was going off her grain almost like she didn’t have the energy to finish chewing.
An idea was born that day. Knowing I had the most nutritious ingredients in mind I went home and began creating a powerful cookie recipe with my daughter. In a day or so we have a pretty good feel for the recipe and began baking batch after batch. We instantly called them Epic Animal Treats, because they are truly EPIC, and it’s the name of my favorite horse. As we headed to the farm all I could do is pray she ate them. Sam loved them!!! They are more of a Superfood Power Bar for animals but they love them like a treat
She would eat as many as she could without stopping. They were easy for her to chew and packed with health benefits. As it turns out all of our horses, a herd of Arabians 14 strong, loved the treats!! And to our surprise our dogs and pig ate them up too. After two weeks of eating these treats Sam began to look really good and went back to finishing her grain. She turned a corner and we all knew she would be good again. Within 45 days she had put back on all the weight that missing from her frail frame at the beginning of April. She was so beautiful and grateful. She has a follow you pocket pony kind of personality and her eyes are so big. They are the perfect window into her happy to be healthy soul. By the end of May she went for a ride for the first time who knows how long and was perfect.
We continued to make these treats for our animals and our friends fur family to for the next year and then we had the opportunity to become part of the Southern California Association of Mini Potbellied Pigs, SCAMPP, by attending events with them to showcase our treats and help raise money for the non-profit. They helped place our mini pig Mable in a wonderful farm up north so she didn’t have to live in the heat of the Coachella Valley any longer. We are so grateful and glad to help them in any way we can. Pigs eat anything almost but boy do they love Epic Animal Treats. The treats are especially good for pigs because they need high levels of Vitamin E in their diet and our treats of packed full of Vitamin A, C & E, as well has high levels of Omega 3-6-9. We sent them to Esther The Wonder Pig and she gave us her stamp of approval all the way from Canada.
Our organic plan has roots now. We are creating a commercial kitchen to mass produce the handmade treats. The goal is to begin selling them locally at stores, and online to customers around the country. We will continue to attend events with SCAMPP every month. Very soon our website will be up and running and you can order for your fur family. As of today the treats have been enjoyed by horses, dogs, cows, pigs, rooster, bunny, and goats from around the country. We are hoping to get them in front of as many animals as we can in the near future. We hope each happy customer can help build the social media for Epic Animal Treats by taking photos and videos of their animals enjoying them
It’s really all about the ingredients! When it boils down to our recipe it is jam packed with human ingredients that we use everyday. Seeds, Peanut butter, Apples, Healthy oil. They are vegan and have been eaten by my daughter since day one. In fact at the SCAMPP event on April 21st we attended the Anaheim Western BBQ put on by Western Anaheim Neighborhood Development Association. It was their 22nd annual family fun event. We really enjoyed being next to the pigs as they were a main attraction and we got great photos and videos. We look forward to being there next year.
Each ingredient in our recipe has a specific reason for being there. No fillers or preservatives added. We have crafted the recipe to be safe for all animals as a daily supplement with health benefits and a clean label. Here are just a few.
